31/07/2011 – Clayton to Wolstonbury, to the Chattri, to Ditchling Beacon, to Black Cap (and a bit) and back

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

Yes, I have finally cracked this swine, although right now I think it won rather than me !!

If anyone wants sore feet, acheing hips, chaffing, unresponsive thigh muscles and other associated pains I have plenty spare !

Started off going up to Wolstonbury, no problem, seemed to fly down to the Chattri and back up to the Beacon path, I wasfine at the Beacon so pushed on, ho hum by the time I had reached and passed Black cap going to the memorial tree the feet were waking up 🙁

It was a sunny day, but not baking hot 🙂 but that didn’t stop me needing 2 bottles of energy drink.

I made it back without taking a sit down but my pace would hardly break records – sorry let me rephrase that as plod rather than pace, I was definately slowing down nearer the end.

Driving back was, erm, entertaining, it felt like cramp would be putting in an appearance  every time the clutch was used, but thankfully that did not come to the party ! phew !

It’s good to nail this walk down, but it won’t be a regular hoof on a sunday for some reason.

Today’s plodding trek

30/07/2011 – Downs Link at Shoreham + pottering around in Burgess Hill area on the bike !

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Yep, it’s another double header, to begin with I went down to Shoreham and headed up the A283 and parked in a layby near Upper Beeding.

I then headed down to Shoreham on the Downs Link, a winding, level trail that goes down the side of the river Adur, I crossed the river at the bridge by the airport, went round and cycled through to the A259, I then retraced my steps, but carried on just before Bramber then returned to the car.

On my travels I was surprised by yet another Heron sculpture, this time by the side of the river.

This run was a delightful level run where you can easily underestimate how far you have travelled, I was quite surprised to have covered a tadge under 10 miles.

Following on from this I went over to my parent’s place and used the cycle track near theirs whilst I waited for their return. Again I was amazed how far I had covered – the best part of 4 miles.

Today I almost doubled how far I have cycled since I started this log, the old legs (and bum) are improving 🙂

10/07/2011 – Ditchling Beacon to Mount Harry and back on the bike !

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Yes, I finally got my bum in gear (it will never forgive me for it too) and got the bike up onto the Downs 🙂

I looked at the terrain and thought that going from the Beacon to Black Cap and back should be reasonable for an old, overweight duffer like me !

After crossing the Brighton / Ditchling  road I set off and was soon surprised by how well I was flying along, then dozy realised I hadn’t turned the GPS on DUH !

Turned GPS on and set off towards Plumpton Plain, downhill I flew but uphill soon got me acquainted with the low gears, a sore undercarriage and tight thigh muscles – uhoh missus !

I reached Black Capand decided to carry on to Mount Harry and then to the fence beyond before turning and heading back at which point the legs decided to disown me – it’s at this point that 2 thoughts cross your mind:

  1. Walking uses a different set of leg muscles to cycling (in my case calf as opposed to thigh) and don’t they let you know !
  2. 5 years plus out of the saddle does tend to lower your confidence, and weaken the saddle area :-O

Overall I was surprised how fast I covered the 7 miles, but I know from having taken frequent rests, and the odd stretch of pushing the bike that there is plenty of room for improvement.

This track will need tackling a few more times to toughen up the muscles and undercarriage but impressed for a first time using the bike in anger !

06/07/2011 – Wolstonbury, the Chattri, the Beacon and back to Clayton

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Yep, had another crack at the big one, this time with Dave for support.

The weather was trying to make it’s mind up when we set off, armed with raincoats which we struggled to make our minds up if we were going to wear – put the coat on the rain stopped, remove the coat and the drips started falling again.

The wind was howling, which whilst it kept you cool, was a hindrance and eventually killed off this attempt too 🙁

Once we had completed Wolstonbury the rain stopped, we went down to the Chattri with the wind in our faces, and returned with wind assistance. There were large quantities of crows in the nearby fields and we were treated to the kind of flying display that starlings normally do.

As we walked to the Beacon we had the wind coming in from the side and partially from the back, we both realised that coming back would be partially into the wind and neither of us fancied 5 miles of that so we drew the line at the Beacon and returned.

By the time we got back to the car the temperature had risen enough for shirt sleeves, and only felt cool when the clouds and wind decided to play.

Surprisingly this walk was within 3 minutes of the previous attempt.

The full walk will be successfully carried out, shame we couldn’t do it this time

05/07/2011 – Arlington Reservoir

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

This was a little amble for Dave’s benefit as he had not been here,

A gentle stroll round the reservoir where we were treated to the sight of swifts / swallows dancing over the water feeding on the wing.

It was a cracking hot day and we took it easy.

03/07/2011 – Harting Down & Wolstonbury Hill

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Went to hunt down the Red Earth installation at Harting Down after the previous attempt was a failure due to a missed turn 🙁

Found the car park off the B2141 and set off to hunt down the sculpture.

Unfortunately the first attempt was down the wrong vale, so back up and down the next lane

.7 of a mile later there was the sculpture.

Whilst walking down we had the treat of seeing the mighty Vulcan flying down to Goodwood for a display – now that’s a fitting flypast 🙂

After taking pictures then there was the slog back, mostly uphill and hot – thank god there was no swearbox nearby !!!

Then drove to Clayton and did the, by now, usual slog up to Wolstonbury Hill followed by the crawl back to the car (it had been a long day)

whilst doing this walk we had several flypasts by a Tiger Moth, that’s the second time in 1 day we have had a flypast  by an iconic aircraft 🙂

There are 2 maps, one for Harting down and one for Wolstonbury

I have included a picture of Harting Down, there are already pictures of Wolstonbury here.
