29/08/2011 – Wolstonbury Hill and the Long Man with Iren

Monday, August 29th, 2011

This was the first walk with Iren which we used to rate her walking fitness, she had expressed an interest in visiting both sites.

We started off with Wolstonbury Hill which was a good test of distance and hill walking, overall Iren did well with only a couple of breathers required for the tougher stretches.

The spectacular views and the hidden artwork of www.redearth.co.uk made Iren’s day as we walked up to the Iron Age hill fort and Trig Point of wolstonbury.

From there it was the descent to Pycombe, the ‘waiting for a fortnight for a break’ crossing of the A273 , and the long haul back up past Pycombe golf club back to  the car.

We then drove down for a quick look at Birling Gap (Iren expressed an interest in tackling the seven sisters – GULP !)

Then we went the long man and the chaos of the carpark, it’s too small for a bank holiday, and was full to bursting.

Taking it easy Iren ascended the Long Man getting used to a new concept – following in front!

You could tell as we went up Iren was impressed, ‘WOW’ kept on being heard, you could also tell that once we went over the top Iren was at her limit and there wouldn’t be a visit to the magical Friston Forest today.

At the end of the day Iren gave an impressive performance for her first downs walk, and we both agreed that there would be more.

28/08/2011 – The Long Man and into the magical Friston Forest

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Set out this morning with the intention of walking by Birling Gap but the plans fell apart when my walking partner called to say that they were ill 🙁

So  I considered my options and decided to visit the Long Man at Wilmington again, I am due to take a friend there, so I thought it prudent to remind myself of the climb.

Amazingly, given my recent history, I found it easy to ascend past the Long Man, sailing up the hill (yes I did sound like an old tramp steamer) and over onto the fields seaward of the hill.

The views are spectacular in the area, seeing Seaford and beyond on the seaward side, and Arlington etc inland.

Instead of heading towards Lullington I picked up the path into Friston Fores, a decision never to be regreted 🙂

The Path I took was a wide path spliting the forest, and it was bathed in sunshine, it has some ascents and descents that are enough  the make you work but not overly strenuous.

The magical element though was finding butterflies and dragonflies dancing in the air above the sunlit path.

I would have liked to take the path down to Friston Place but dark clouds were gathering and you can guess who left his coat in the car, some 4 mile away !

Thankfully the rain was a mere sprinkling and I didn’t get a drenching.

the walk back, once out of the forest, was fairly level with the exception of the descent back past the Long Man which is good for waking up the thigh muscles !!

21/08/2011 – Clayton to Wolstonbury Hill and back

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Just a short walk today as I left it late (around midday) and it had got warm and muggy.

Parked up at the carpark by the mills at Clayton and set off for Wolstonbury.

Strolled up the hill and then looped back viewing Red Earth’s sculpture Fold then headed back

As I had set off without bringing a drink I erred on the side of caution and went back to the car,

with an earlier start and carrying fluids I would have probably gone on the the Beacon  or further.

20/08/2011 – Mum get’s on her bike

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Yep, it’s another ride by mum following on from her Shoreham attempts there was this:

Near mum’s home there are some cycle tracks, so we used these for today’s ride.

Unlike Shoreham these are not level with undulations to teach use of the gears and make you work.

Mum did far better than shoreham, I was proud of her, she knew she had improved and it showed.

Here’s the video of her http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwYJOJiyFpk

20/08/2011 – Ditchling Beacon to Blackcap and back

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Yep, I revisited this for a decent ride – well 5.24 miles is better than around 2 🙂

After the usual fun and games driving up the Beacon (cyclists on a tight twisty road) I parked up and unloaded the bike,

Although there was a sponsored walk going on I have to say I’ve seen more walkers on the trail.

The latter end of the first field was entertaining avoiding cows that were either pregnant or with calf, not the best time to pass through a herd of cattle :-O

Once through the cattle it was a usual ride through to Blackcap and up the hill to the Trig point.

Returning I took the opportunity to have a natter with one of the Marshalls before ascending from Blackcap Down.

Disappointedly I had to get off and walk a couple of times on the return, the biking stamina and leg muscles need building up a bit.

Overall it was a good ride that builds on my distances travelled this year.

There are two videos covering the return from Blackcap:

14/08/2011 – Fit and Fuggared (1st attempt this year)

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Yep, I’ve finally got round to revisiting Fit and Fuggared – the walk across the seven sisters,

And, yes you’ve got it, I never managed the walk from Birling Gap to the Golden Galleon and back.

I (and my body) had fogotten how savage the hills are, the first sister soon reminded me,

I mentally split the walk into 4 stages for each direction:

  1. From Birling Gap to the ladder stile
  2. From the ladder stile to cairn
  3. From the cairn to the seat by the gate
  4. From the gate to the Golden Galleon

Although this walk isn’t long (8.5 miles in total) compared to the walks I have been doing is brutal and demanding, both physically and mentally.

By the time I reached Stage 2 I knew I was struggling, and threw in the towel at Stage 3

I cannot believe I couldn’t face an 8.5 mile walk after doing one of double the length a fortnight ago 🙁

I have done this walk last year, I will be revisiting it and having another crack or 3 at it !

I have included a picture just the other side of Stage 1, looking back at the ladder stile and the imposing slope facing you :-O The easiest climb is up to the righ, unfortunately that takes you towards the cliff edge :-O

13/08/2011 – Round town

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Went for a quick ride round town testing out the GPS holder and the bikecam.

well the bikecam worked a treat, the GPS took it’s ruddy time finding the satellites (you will note that I have had to manual create the first half of this ride)

It was a  ride up the hill, along the high street, down the road and across to my road before returning home.

Here’s the video from bikecam – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgYoYdu-TQ

I would have done more but the weather was changeable.

Round town - the distance is correct, but no timings due to the sat nave taking it’s time waking up.

06/08/2011 – Shoreham mini bites

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

Today was a couple of short trips at Shoreham with Mum, trying to ride again after years of not using the bike.

The aim being to give her some gentle riding and build her confidence

At the second attempt she did manage some pedalling (she needed some better shoes and the saddle rising slightly – the arrows on the map show where she changed)

Have to say it was fun trying to get both bikes on the carrier, but we got there, ok so 1.27 is not the greatest distance I have travelled but for mum it was good to see her mobile again.

It’s early days but I can see her improving as she get’sused to the bike again.

Today’s little trips at Shoreham
