29/08/2011 – Wolstonbury Hill and the Long Man with Iren

Monday, August 29th, 2011

This was the first walk with Iren which we used to rate her walking fitness, she had expressed an interest in visiting both sites.

We started off with Wolstonbury Hill which was a good test of distance and hill walking, overall Iren did well with only a couple of breathers required for the tougher stretches.

The spectacular views and the hidden artwork of www.redearth.co.uk made Iren’s day as we walked up to the Iron Age hill fort and Trig Point of wolstonbury.

From there it was the descent to Pycombe, the ‘waiting for a fortnight for a break’ crossing of the A273 , and the long haul back up past Pycombe golf club back to  the car.

We then drove down for a quick look at Birling Gap (Iren expressed an interest in tackling the seven sisters – GULP !)

Then we went the long man and the chaos of the carpark, it’s too small for a bank holiday, and was full to bursting.

Taking it easy Iren ascended the Long Man getting used to a new concept – following in front!

You could tell as we went up Iren was impressed, ‘WOW’ kept on being heard, you could also tell that once we went over the top Iren was at her limit and there wouldn’t be a visit to the magical Friston Forest today.

At the end of the day Iren gave an impressive performance for her first downs walk, and we both agreed that there would be more.
