29/01/2012 – two trig points and the Chattri

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Went today for a longer walk, drove to the mills at Clayton and strode out for Wolstonbury Hill,

The climb from Pycombe was as muddy as I expected and I slithered up through the morass created by the horses reaching the summit as the mist lifted 🙂

On the way back down it was good to see that the Redearth installation on the hill was still there.

From Wolstonbury I walked on to the Beacon then came back before  descending to the Chattri.

The Chattri track was, as expected, muddy in places at the bottom of the hill but easier to traverse than that hill climb for wolstonbury.

I’ve done the Chattri several times now, the climb back up the Beacon / Clayton track  is still as sapping as it ever was.

A good walk, and one that will no doubt be done again.

I tracked this by means of both the Sat Nav and the tracker on my phone, I wouls love to know how there is a 0.8 of a mile difference.

To play fair I have recorded this with the lesser value which came from the GPS unit.

28/01/2012 – A quick trial with mum and her new bike

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

This ride was a quick go for mum on her new bike (yes another as the one she recently got died a horrible death)

We just went up and down the pathway near her house so she could get used to the gears – this one has 15, she is used to 10)

It’s not much in the way of distance but they all add up 🙂

28/01/2012 – A double trip on the market day shortened round town route

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Went for a quick ride round town, this being shortened as the Broadway is closed on Saturdays for the market, so it’s turn left into Heath Road, mutter obscenities as you climb the hill, then a fast run down hill to Oathall Road, continue bombing down Oathall Road before the never ending climb back to the flats.

But me being me (silly ol’ sod) I then repeated the exercise to get a bit of distance under the belt,

All in all this double run is a bit tougher on the old legs than the usual run, but is @ 3/4 mile further so worth doing again.

22/01/2012 – The mills at Clayton to Mount Harry and back

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Yep, I’ve started on the longer walks this year 🙂

As the forecast wasn’t too bad decided to walk from the mills past Ditchling Beacon and on to the beacon at Mount Harry.

The temperature was cool, but heading out you don’t notice the cold wind heading eastwards, coming back that’s in your face and then you feel yourself cool down, which is weird when you are working harder to walk intothe wind.

The trail was mostly dry although there was some mud around the bostals and Plumpton Plain.

It felt good to be back doing the longer walks and it didn’t feel as bad as expected, so longers walks will be looked into 🙂

21/01/2012 – A ride on the Downs Link cycle path at West Grinstead

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Revisited this track for a quick ride with Mum,

We were looking to make it to the Country Park at Southwater -Ho hum, the best laid plans of mice, men and mad cyclists from Sussex !!

We found the track drier than last time (unless you went off the sides of the path) and Mum was much more confident.

As we rode along we could here some odd noises from Mum’s bike – utoh !

As we just reached 1 mile we had to stop for an oncoming pack of riders, a fortuitous stop as it happens :-O

After the pack had passed Mum went to move off and something caught my eye, her pedal crank was flapping about unsupported.

I called off the ride and we startede to head back pushing the bikes.

Mum suggested that I ride out and she would meet me at the car, so i rode back and went @ 1/2 mile past the station and then rode back to meet Mum  (I then rode in bottom gear alongside Mum walking back to the car).

So I managed 3.48 miles, Mum got 2 miles.

15/01/2012 – Jack and Jill to the Beacon and Back

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Yep, revisited the walk, this time alone with the aim to see how fast I can now walk it.

I walked at a fairly brisk pace and mananged to complete it in 75 minutes 🙂

This is a good walk to keep the metabolism going 🙂

It was cool today but walking briskly soon warmed me up and I soon completed the walk.

15/01/2012 – A ride on the Newhaven to Seaford cycle path

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Went for a gentle ride on the Newhaven to Seaford cycle path exploring a couple of the tracks that branch off.

Although frosty when we set off, no gloves were required when we unloaded the bikes and went cycling, it was warm and pleasant 🙂

The path is a good all year round track with no mud to slip on.

We rode to the bridge in Seaford where the track ends and to  just before the roundabout at Denton.

Overall a nice ride on a decent track, but next time we will take the track further into Newhaven, maybe across the river.

14/01/2012 – A walk around the Folder’s Lane area in Burgess Hill

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Went for a walk with Mum, Iren and Dad around the Folder’s lane area in Burgess Hill to blow away the cobwebs.

for the first time the walk was done with 1/2 kilo weights strapped to my ankles to help burn the fat off (I hope them weights are industrial, they have their work cut out!)

Although we are in mid winter the temperature was still quite bearable, and we had an ejoyable stroll round the area.

This is the first all tarmac walk, and it makes a change from the usual offroad ambles.

08/01/2011 – Haywards Heath circular ride, 4th visit

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Yep, visited the circular run again, and tried to beat my best time of 14 minutes, or failing that the last run of 15 minutes (I had ambition!)

The roads were relatively clear so I wasn’t held up by queuing or parking cars, and managed to time the traffic lights in South Road  correctly 🙂

It’s still a struggle getting up Oathall Road and Sydney Road, but it’s sure fun whizzing down that long stretch in Oathall Road 🙂

I managed the run in 13 minutes which is a record for me 🙂 but boy do I feel it now.

07/01/2012 – Jack and Jill to the Beacon and Back

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

Today we decided to get this year’s walking account underway with a relative easy, shortish walk and no mud.

So we drove up to Jack and Jill and strode out to the Beacon and back, a fairly short (by our standards) walk of 4.23 miles

The signpost at the top of the hill has weathered a treat

The signpost now nicely weathered

The Serengeti dew Pond has filled up a treat with the rain

The Serengeti dew pond

It was good to see the dew ponds had filled with water again, but the good drainage of the downs had prevailed and the path was not muddy.

The views were excellent, however we could have done without the wind.

There is an unusual  contouring on the top of the brow near the Beacon, the northern slope looks down on the path up from the base of Beacon road from Ditchling.

The unusual contours on the brow

All in all this was a good start to this year’s walking –  4 miles down, 220 to go :-O
